Monday's quarterfinals at the boys' state basketball tournament
Class 1A
SOUTH O'BRIEN 46, GRAND VIEW CHRISTIAN 32
Grand View Christian thrived by the 3-pointer all season. Monday afternoon, the Defenders died by it.
GVC shot 38 times from the field in its Class 1A state basketball tournament quarterfinal against South O'Brien, 35 from beyond the 3-point arc. Only 11 of them went in, however, which led to a 46-32 loss at Wells Fargo Arena.
South O'Brien (23-3) received a game-high 19 points from Cameron Maxwell. Damon Struve added 10.
Grand View Christian, which led the state in scoring at 80.6 points per game, had no player score in double figures. The Defenders were outrebounded by an eye-popping 34-16 margin and outscored in the paint, 28-2.
South O'Brien is the seventh seed at this tournament, GVC was second. South O'Brien plays Gladbrook-Reinbeck (24-2) in a Thursday afternoon semifinal at 12:15.
COUNCIL BLUFFS ST. ALBERT 69, DANVILLE 46
Class 1A's top seed went down hard, as St. Albert (16-9) broke away in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons shot 54.2 percent from the field, including 61.9 percent in the second half. Matt Fagan led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Danville (24-2) got 17 points from Kole Perkins. The Bears shot it at a 37.5-percent slip.
St. Albert plays West Hancock in Thursday morning's 10:30 semifinals.
WEST HANCOCK 67, IKM-MANNING 51
Connor Sonius scored 20 points to move the fourth-seeded Eagles into the semifinals.
Dylan Eckels added 16 points and Nate Paulus 15 for WH, which took a 34-24 halftime lead and put the game out of reach by outscoring IKM-Manning by a 21-9 margin in the third quarter. The Eagles were a solid 10 for 21 from 3-point range in the game.
IKM-Manning (22-3) was led by Kyle Wagner's 15 points. Jared Vollstedt added 13.
GLADBROOK-REINBECK 67, JESUP 48
Class 2A
PELLA CHRISTIAN 59, DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 52
As it was in Class 1A, Class 2A's top seed was upended by an eight seed.
Alex Pringle hit a go-ahead 3-pointer late in regulation to put Pella Christian (17-9) ahead for good. Levi Jungling led the Eagles with 21 points.
Dike-New Hartford (25-1) was the state's last undefeated team. The Wolverines rallied from a 29-21 halftime deficit to take a lead in the third quarter.
Ben Latusak led D-NH with 12 points. Cole Wildeboer added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Pella Christian plays Cascade in Thursday afternoon's 2A semifinals at 2 p.m.
