The life and work of Garret Frey hasn't come easy, but both will be on full display Friday when the author speaks on campus at the University of Iowa.
The Cedar Rapids resident and Kirkwood student will be talking about his life and his new book, “As I Am,” which are one in the same. The book, cowritten by Dr. Karen Hutchins Pirnot, tells Frey's life story, and can be purchased on both Amazon and on the Barnes & Noble Web site.
Frey, 27, was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 4. Since then, this Cedar Rapids resident's journey has traversed all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
The autobiography's co-author, Dr. Hutchins Pirnot, will be on hand to speak with Frey about the book.
Pirnot and Frey met while he was at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after his accident. She helped him learn how to cope with the difficulties, both physical and emotional, that can beset a person with disabilities. Together, they spent a year writing, editing, revising and publishing “As I Am,” all by e-mail.
Frey and Hutchins Pirnot will be speaking at the Lindquist Center, located at Madison and Burlington, in Iowa City. The event will begin at 3 p.m.
