Linn County authorities are trying to determine who stole an ATM machine from a convenience store in Whittier.
Col. John Stuelke, of the sheriff's office, said the ATM machine at Whittier Market, 1002 County Home Road, was stolen sometime between midnight and 5 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect or suspects, who got through a locked door, also took a couple cartons of cigarettes before they left.
Stuelke declined to say how much cash was inside the ATM. He said the machine is owned by a private company. Investigators were trying to determine if surveillance video might have captured the incident.
Authorities said the crime is unusual.
"Several years ago, probably 15 years ago, we had a few of them taken, but recently we haven't had anything like that," Stuelke said.
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIME.
