American Legion posts in Iowa are hoping this is the year they can bring attendance at Boys State back to pre-pandemic levels.
Boys State is a weeklong experience during which high school juniors learn about the fundamentals of democracy, leadership and civic engagement. Participants create mock governments, debate policies, and interact with state and local officials.
There also are participatory sports and music activities. The program is presented at no cost to the boys or their families.
Boys State is in need of young men to attend this year’s event at Camp Dodge in Iowa, June 22-27.
This year the Legion hopes to attract at least 300 boys to the camp near Des Moines.
Notable Boys State alumni include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, astronaut Neil Armstrong, and basketball legend Michael Jordan.
Eligible Boys State candidates are high school junior boys who will graduate in the class of 2026. They must show strong leadership, academic success, and community involvement.
Parents and boys interested in attending should contact their local American Legion post. In Linn County, they also can attend an information and orientation program Sunday, May 4 at the Marion American Legion Post, 625 31st St. The information session starts at 1 p.m. It will last one hour.
For more information, contact Dean Abramczak, Marion Post 298 Boys State Chair, at deanabramczak@gmail.com.
The cost of the program is funded by local American Legion posts, community agencies and the Iowa Department of the American Legion. All expenses, including housing, meals, and activities, are fully covered, allowing participants to focus on gaining leadership skills and a deeper understanding of civic engagement.
