Keokuk County Deputy Eric Stein is fatally shot by Jeff Krier when Stein and other officers go to Krier's home near Sigourney to talk to Krier about an incident that happened the night before. Krier is later shot and killed at the scene. It was the first time in 25 years an Iowa law enforcement officer was fatally shot while on duty.
