ELGIN - A 4-year-old boy died Friday after being shot in the head, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff Marty Fisher asked the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to assist in the investigation.
The Sheriff's Office said it received a 911 call at 2:36 p.m. Friday about a shooting on Main Street in Elgin. As emergency crews and deputies were en route, a second caller reported that a child had been shot and was unconscious.
Deputies found a 4-year-old boy inside a mobile home, a gunshot wound to his head. The boy was taken by ambulance to Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, where he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff's Office said.
Two adults and two small children were at the home, authorities said. No arrests were announced and authorities said the investigation continues.
The name of the boy, and the circumstances of the shooting, were not disclosed.
