Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson of Rockford is among 30 Americans killed Aug. 6 in Afghanistan when their helicopter was shot down by insurgents. Tumilson's loyal dog Hawkeye laid by his casket throughout the funeral. Spc. Brent Maher, Spc. Don Nichols of Shell Rock and Staff Sgt. James A. Justice of Grimes are killed in Afghanistan in April. Ottumwa airman Staff Sgt. Joseph J. Hamski dies in a roadside attack in Afghanistan in May. Sgt. 1st Class Terryl Pasker of Cedar Rapids is killed during combat operations July 9 in Afghanistan. U.S. Marine Cpl. Zach Reiff, of Preston, dies in a November bombing.
