12-year-old killed in boating accident on Coralville Lake

Authorities spent Sunday evening on the scene of a fatal boating accident on Coralville Lake.

Officials say Sarah Nicole (Nikki) Perkins, 12, of Fairfield, was hit by an oncoming boat after falling off a tube being towed by another boat. The incident happened 150 yards north of Mehaffey Bridge at about 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

DNR officials say Perkins had been camping and boating with friends over the Memorial Day holiday.

Deputies closed the nearby Mehaffey Boat Ramp during the investigation. It reopened about 9:30 PM.

The names of the boat operators are not being released at this time.

Conservation officer Shawn Meier says no charges will be filed until authorities can verify that criminal acts were committed.

The Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
