UPDATE: Ten teenagers were cited by police after a fight broke out Monday at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids.
No serious injuries were reported in the fight, which began around 8:40 a.m. in the main foyer near the office. A police officer stationed at the school noticed the fight and summoned more officers, while she and staff intervened.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said the fight began when an 18-year-old female, who is not a student at Jefferson, came to the school to fight with students over an unrelated incident from the weekend. Nine females and one male from ages 16-18 were involved, she said.
All 10 were charged with disorderly conduct and allowed to sign a promise to appear in court, police said.
Because the incident happened between class periods, students were kept in second-period classrooms for about 10 additional minutes until the situation was under control, according to school district spokeswoman Marcia Hughes. She said staff locked all exterior doors except for the main entrance.
