Here are five Gazette-area 2A and 1A high school softball regional-semifinal games to watch Friday and why.
Postseason play will be at full throttle, starting Friday. Class 4A and 3A opens substate play. Cedar Rapids Prairie, Iowa City High and Iowa City Liberty are all No. 1 seeds in 4A. Marion is a top seed in 3A.
The Gazette’s 2025 Female Athlete of the Year finalists: Libby Dix and Chloe Meester of Mount Vernon, Libby Fandel of Cedar Rapids Xavier, Jayden Kuper of Monticello and Noelle Steines of Tipton.
Softball notes: Tracking the conference softball races, and saluting the champions. The MVC Mississippi Division race should become more clear tonight. Meanwhile, Lisbon, Williamsburg, Mount Vernon and Sigourney have extended lengthy title strings.
High school softball: Hayden Gookin’s 10-strikeout three-hitter pushed Mount Vernon to the Wamac Conference East Division championship.
Carson Nolan was down to his final strike and stayed alive by fouling off three straight pitches before belting a three-run triple in the top of the seventh. He helped Benton Community beat host Mount Vernon, 4-3 , Thursday night.
Linn-Mar sophomore Charlie Sarsfield is following in the footsteps of his father and brother, who were standouts on the baseball team. He is a key component to the lineup as a leadoff hitter and center fielder. Linn-Mar beat Mount Vernon, 7-2, Tuesday night at Oak Ridge Middle School.
High school softball: The two-time defending champion in Class 3A, Williamsburg opens the new season at No. 1.
Prep softball: 16 area players to watch for the 2025 season, including 12 first-team all-staters from last season.
