Here is The Gazette’s first 2023-24 installment of area high school boys’ wrestling individual rankings.
The Iowa high school boys’ wrestling is paused until 2024. The season resumes with 6 1/2 weeks of competition until champions are crowned in Des Moines. Here are some notable events for the second half of the season.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is likely to announce its girls’ basketball regional pairings in mid- to late January. Here is The Gazette’s first version of mock pairings ... all five classes, all 346 teams.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the first installment of its dual rankings for all classes. The poll is used to determined regional dual qualifiers and are considered in pairings. Eight regional dual champions advance to the State Duals tournament Feb. 3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

In addition to overall co-players of the year Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg and Preston Ries of Monticello, The Gazette’s 2023 all-area football team is led by offensive player of the year Grant Glausser of Western Dubuque and defensive player of the year Rayce Heitman of Williamsburg. Curt Ritchie of Williamsburg is the area coach of the year.
There have been holiday races, backyard football games and living room scraps. Mikey Ryan honed his competitive edge at home as the youngest of nine athletically gifted siblings. The returning state medalist claimed the 150-pound title at the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday. The Mustangs won the team title.
Jackson Hird learned a cowcatcher move in middle school. He relies on it when he needs a big maneuver. It came in handy for a pin in Mount Vernon’s 43-26 Wamac Conference dual victory over Clear Creek Amana.
Solon, Clear Creek Amana and North Linn maintain the top three spots in this week’s girls basketball Super Ten. Mount Vernon climbs a spot to No. 4, and Western Dubuque and Marion are newcomers for this season.
