Mount Mercy University announced Friday it will begin a varsity football program in the 2026 season. The school constructed a large athletics facility near campus in 2017 that included a football stadium. The stadium’s goal posts have always pointed away from the field, so as not to interfere with the other sports played there.

Ashley Smith filled the leadoff spots in high school and for travel club teams. After a year of getting acclimated to college softball, she’s back in that role for Mount Mercy.

Joel Vaske spent the fall working a full-time job, helping on his family’s farm and coaching high school football. His competitive nature led him back to Mount Mercy for one last baseball season.
