Kernels centerfielder Travis Witherspoon has been placed on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. He will be out at least a week. Witherspoon was injured in Beloit over the weekend. He singled to lead off the ballgame on Sunday, but we replaced defensively in the bottom of the 1st inning.
Witherspoon is hitting .232 with 6 HR and 29 RBI. He is 3rd in the league with 31 stolen bases. He won the Midwest League home run derby last Monday night at the All Star Game in Davenport.
Chris Giovinazzo, 2011 39th round draft pick, will join the team in Davenport for this week's series. Giovinazzo is a right handed hitter and played collegiately at UCLA.
The Kernels will play 7:00 p.m. games Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Modern Woodmen Park. Max Russell, Brian Diemer, and Heath Nichols are the scheduled starters for Cedar Rapids.
