Wing, Grichuk power Kernels

DAVENPORT - Michael Wing and Randal Grichuk each hit home runs and Stephen Locke pitched seven solid innings, lifting the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 5-2 win Sunday over the Quad Cities River Bandits before 5,755 fans at Modern Woodman Park.

The Kernels (33-29 second half) built a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, only to see the River Bandits score a pair in their half of the inning.

Grichuk gave the Kernels the final margin with a two-run shot, his seventh this season, in the top of the eighth.

Locke (8-7) gave up

two runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out seven while walking just one.

David Carpenter pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to secure his sixth save.

The teams continue the four-game series today at 7 p.m.
