On Sunday, September 25 the Kernels will host the 2011 Walk to Defeat ALS at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The walk will feature entertainment, including balloon art, face painting, inflatable games, musicians, Cedar Rapids Fire Department and the CR Spirits, as well as ALS information booths.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. It covers all the bases - research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy - in providing help and hope to those facing the disease.
The Walk to Defeat ALS is The ALS Association's biggest annual event, which raises funds to sustain patient care and support cutting-edge research. More than just a few-mile trek, it's an opportunity to bring hope to ALS patients, to raise money for a cure, and to come together with your friends and family to fight for a great cause.
The Walk to Defeat ALS will open at 11:00 am with the vendor fair and entertainment. The walk will begin on Perfect Game Field at 2:00 pm. To register for the walk, or to learn more about ALS, visit http://web.alsa.org/site/TR?fr_id=7440&pg=entry or call 515-727-1677.
