RoughRiders lease

Apr. 29, 2008 8:45 pm
The city OKed a new 2-year lease for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to use the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The USHL hockey club is for sale, with a buyer from Chicago supposed to be in line for the purchase.
It'll be interesting to see what the new owner's plans are for the franchise. Does he/she plan on trying to keep the team here for the long haul? Will he/she have a better relationship with the city than the current ownership group?
To me, it'd be best for there to be local ownership of the franchise, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Maybe someone can convince future NHL Hall of fFamer Chris Chelios to buy the club. Omaha's ownership includes Mario Lemieux and Luc Robitaille.
Chelios' son, Dean, plays for the RoughRiders, and there's a younger Chelios boy who's about to be old enough to play junior hockey. Cedar Rapids would be a nice place for him to play, too, Chris. Think about it.
