Nov. 10, 2013 1:25 am
URBANDALE - The Des Moines Buccaneers scored five of the final six goals to knock off the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-2, Saturday night in United States Hockey League hockey.
Cedar Rapids took the first lead on a power-play goal from defenseman Charlie Curti just 1:27 in, but it was pretty much all Des Moines after that.
The Bucs tied the game with a goal in the second period and scored three times in the third, including back-to-back empty netters in the final minute. A.J. Greer put Des Moines ahead for good with a goal at the 7:55 mark, with Michael Marnell making it 3-1 six minutes later.
Defenseman Nathan Widman gave the RoughRiders hope with a goal with 2:48 to go, but the two tallies with RoughRiders goalie Danny Tirone out for an extra attacker provided the final margin. Des Moines won the shots on goal battle as well, 38-29.
Cedar Rapids (8-3-1) completes a suspended game with Dubuque on Tuesday night at home. The Riders lead the game, 2-0, in the second period.
The Riders then host Fargo on Friday night and Dubuque again a night later.
