Jul. 23, 2013 2:55 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - The parent Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that Cedar Rapids Kernels relief pitcher Caleb Brewer has voluntarily retired and will be replaced on the active roster by pitcher Brian Gilbert.
Gilbert joins the Kernels from Rookie-level Elizabethton, where he went 1-0 with a save and 0.00 earned run average. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out seven in six innings.
Gilbert was a seventh-round draft pick of the Twins in June out of Seton Hall University.
Brewer was picked up by the Twins in early June after being released from the Atlanta Braves organization. He went 1-1 with a save and 5.95 ERA in 20 2/3 innings for the Kernels, allowing 28 hits, walking 10 and striking out 18.
The Kernels host Peoria on Wednesday night.
