Kernels will try again today

Jul. 5, 2010 8:57 am
What do you think the Los Angeles Angels would have thought about this scene? A gully washer suddenly hit Memorial Stadium in the bottom of the fourth inning of last night's Cedar Rapids Kernels-Wisconsin game. The grounds crew and other staffers tried to pull the tarp onto an infield quickly getting drenched but ran out of steam before getting it completely covered.
On rushed the cavalry - several Kernels players, including mega-prospect Mike Trout. 'Just trying to help,' Trout said.
'We were just trying to get that tarp on fast so we could finish this game,' said outfielder Matt Long. 'But they got a lot of water on it pretty quickly.' The game was suspended with Cedar Rapids leading, 4-3. It'll be completed today at 5:35 p.m., with a seven-inning game to follow. Presumably, Kernels players won't be pulling the tarp to get the field ready.
'There are a lot of things to worry about, then worrying about that,' Kernels Manager Bill Mosiello said about the possibility of players getting injured helping out. 'In the old days, players used to help pull tarp all the time.
True. Then, again, players didn't have contracts that included million-dollar signing bonuses, either.
This is as far as the grounds crew could get the tarp on the field Sunday afternoon in the fourth inning at Veterans Memorial Stadium. (Jeff Johnson)
