Kernels topple Quad Cities

DAVENPORT - Heath Nichols pitched five strong innings and catcher Carlos Ramirez rapped out three hits to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 6-4 victory last night over the Quad Cities River Bandits.
Nichols (1-2) walked five and gave up four hits, but was able to work out of trouble each time. Wes Hatton added a pair of hits for the Kernels. Jean Almanzar added a 3-run double in the second inning. Cedar Rapids scored three insurance runs in the top of the ninth, which were needed as Quad Cities added three in the bottom of the inning.
The teams play the final game of the 3-game set today at 7 p.m.
