The Cedar Rapids Kernels wrapped up their eight-week tour of local elementary schools on Thursday, concluding its 13th consecutive year performing the Kernels Summer Reading Program.
Thanks to the generous support of 13th year presenting sponsor Toyota Financial Services and contributing sponsors Rockwell Collins, The Gazette, Fazoli's, Learning Ladder and CopyWorks, the Kernels Summer Reading Program is able to offer elementary school students incentives and prizes for reading over the summer.
This was the Reading Program's biggest year to date, topping 2010.
The Kernels presented to 58 schools in 12 different cities - reaching approximately 32,000 students - with the goal being to stimulate the minds and imaginations of kids in the Corridor by encouraging reading through the spring and summer. The elementary school students were visited by Cedar Rapids Kernels players, as well as the team mascot, Mr. Shucks.
Students who choose to participate can earn prizes by reaching various milestones on their reading scorecard, ranging from 250-1,000 minutes. The rewards for reading include a free ticket to a Kernels game, Fazoli's kids meal, a Kernels jersey pillow, and a Kernels blanket.
Over 2,700 kids took part in the Reading Program in 2010 - the highest ever - and the Kernels expect well over 3,000 to participate this season. The program runs until August 19, culminating with “Reader Recognition Day” at the ballpark on August 21.
On Reader Recognition Day, all of the 1,000-minute readers are able to take photos, get autographs, and play catch with Kernels players on the field before the team's game against the Peoria Chiefs.
