The Cedar Rapids Kernels and The Building Pros of Eastern Iowa hosted "Restock Week" at Veterans Memorial Stadium from Aug. 21-25, with the hopes of raising enough food to fill 54 food pantries in seven counties across Iowa.
Results from the event were staggering. The money raised combined with the food donated was equivalent to 2,632 pounds of food.
Every cent raised helped the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) restock its pantries, and every $1 raised equaled 1.6 pounds of food for people in need. Fans were also urged to bring non-perishable food items to the ballpark.
Fans attending the Kernels fans during "Restock Week" came out in full force to help those hungry and in need - $368.09 was raised (equal to 428 pounds of food) and 426 pounds of non-perishable food items were brought to the ballpark.
In addition to donating food or money, the Kernels gave $3 per ticket sold when fans signed up for tickets through a special HACAP order form. A total of 337 tickets were sold through the order form, which meant the Kernels donated $1,011 - or 1,617 pounds of food - to HACAP to support its cause.
