A ninth inning Kernels rally fell two runs short, as the Kane County Cougars took the second game of a three game series with Cedar Rapids, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon in Geneva, IL. Mike Trout went 2-4 with a triple to extend his hitting streak to eight games and Eric Oliver was 2-3 with a double and RBI.
Walks hurt the Kernels pitching staff this afternoon, as they issued eight free passes to Kane County batters. Kernels starter Garrett Richards allowed a run on just three hits, walked five and struck out eight over 5.1 innings in a no-decision effort. C.J. Bressoud (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings.
Reliever Connor Hoehn (2-0) picked up the win for Kane County as Max Stassi and Mike Gilmartin each had 2 RBI. Cougar starter Ian Krol allowed a run on three hits and struck out four over four innings, but didn't figure in the final decision.
The Kernels and Cougars wrap up their three game series Monday at noon. John Rodgers brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY AM. Fans may listen on-line at www.kmryradio.com, or www.kernels.com.
The Kernels then head to Wisconsin for three games, followed by a three game commuter series in Burlington. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on April 27. Tickets are available on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
