As we head into the heart of summer, the heat is on the rise as well as the chance of sunburns. Even a visit to the ballpark requires skin protection, and the Cedar Rapids Kernels have you covered. Starting this year, the Kernels and several other Iowa Minor League teams have partnered with the Iowa Cancer Consortium (ICC) to provide free sunscreen to everyone at the game to prevent dangerous skin damage.
Melanoma is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and it is often overlooked when people young and old alike spend time outside. Skin cancer can affect anyone, and a major cause is from exposure to the summer sun. Spending an afternoon outside watching a baseball game poses the same risks as any other activity.
The Kernels have set up multiple sunscreen stations spread across the concourse at Perfect Game Field in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Each dispenser is simple and free to use, and is accessible during every game thanks to the Iowa Cancer Consortium. The ICC organization partners with researchers, hospitals, legislation, and cancer survivors to promote cancer awareness and reduce occurrences.
The Kernels return home on Friday, June 22nd to open up the 2nd half of the season vs. Beloit. Tickets are available online at www.kernels.com or by calling the Kernels box office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
