Kernels lose in extra innings to West Michigan, 3-2

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — Danny Pinero doubled home Austin Athmann from first base with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give West Michigan a 3-2, 10-inning win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League baseball Thursday night.
Athmann reached with one out on a fielding error on C.R. shortstop Gorge Munoz. Hector Lujan (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season out of the bullpen, allowing the winning run and also the tying run to score in the eighth.
He was brought on with two on and two out in the eighth and allowed an RBI single to West Michigan's Zac Shepherd.
The Cedar Rapids offense continued to struggle, coming up with only three hits in 10 innings. Down a run in the sixth, Munoz homered to left-center leading off to tie the game at 1-1, A walk, error and sacrifice fly by Lewin Diaz scored a go-ahead run later in the frame.
The Kernels (49-42, 10-11) broke a 24-inning scoreless streak with those two runs. In their last three games, they have scored three runs on eight hits.
The teams conclude their three-game series Friday.
