BELOIT, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels stranded 10 men on base, including the bases loaded twice in a 5-3 loss Thursday afternoon to the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field.
Beloit (27-18) has won six games in a row and shaved the Kernels' lead in the Midwest League's Western Division to just three games. The teams play again Friday night before the Kernels return home for a lengthy homestand.
Starting pitcher Mason Melotakis (3-2) took the loss, allowing all five Snappers runs in 4 1/3 innings. Cedar Rapids is now 30-15.
Byron Buxton, J.D. Williams and Candido Pimentel had two hits each for the Kernels, with Buxton driving in a pair of runs.
