Kernels falls to Quad Cities, 9-6

DAVENPORT — The Quad Cities River Bandits clinched the Western Division second-half championship with a 9-6 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League baseball Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.
The Kernels (71-62 overall, 32-31 second half) had a 5-0 lead after the second inning, but Quad Cities knocked out starting pitcher Tyler Beardsley (4-8) with four runs in the third and three in the fifth to go ahead for good.
Lewin Diaz went 3-for-4 for Cedar Rapids, which went only 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Travis Blankenhorn homered, his 12th of the season, which is tied for the team lead.
The teams play the finale of their four-game series Monday night at 6:35.
