Kernels extinguish Dragons, 8-2

Dayton, OH – The Cedar Rapids Kernels pounded out 17 hits in an 8-2 win over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field in Dayton. Jean Segura went 4-5 with two doubles and a stolen base and Matt Long was 2-2 a double and 3 RBI for the Kernels.
The Kernels jumped out to a 5-0 lead, more than enough run support for Kernels starter Ariel Pena (4-2) who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out three over six innings. Buddy Boshers struck out four over two innings of relief and Carson Andrew struck out two over an inning. Dayton starter Ricky Bowen (2-4) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over 3 IP in taking the loss.
Every Kernels starting position player had at least one hit as Richard Cates was 2-4 with a double and RBI and Casey Haerther extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-5 with a double. Terrell Alliman was 2-4 with an RBI and Justin Bass was 1-4 with an RBI. Henry Rodriguez was 2-4 with a double and Cameron Satterwhite was 2-3 with an RBI for Dayton.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 14-10 (57-35 overall) and is the seventh win in a row over Dayton, dating back to 2009 when the Kernels swept the six games between the two teams. Dayton falls to 8-16 and 38-55 overall.
