Kernels beat Peoria, winning streak to six

PEORIA, Ill. - At this point, the Cedar Rapids Kernels need to save some of this winning for the Midwest League playoffs.
The Kernels got strong starting pitching from Tim Shibuya for a 2-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Monday night. It's the sixth consecutive win for Cedar Rapids, which has won 12 of 13.
The teams play again Tuesday night at 6:30.
Shibuya threw eight innings of five-hit ball to improve his record to 2-0. Madison Boer pitched the ninth for the save.
The Kernels got a run in the first inning on a Mike Gonzales RBI single and another in the second on an RBI hit from Jeremias Pineda. Joel Licon went 0-for-3 and had his hitting streak snapped at 16.
Cedar Rapids is a season-high 32 games over .500 at 78-46.
