Jimmy Kerrigan’s huge triple in 9th gives Cedar Rapids Kernels win at Kane County

GENEVA, Ill. — Jimmy Kerrigan's two-out, bases-clearing triple with two outs in the top of the ninth inning scored the winning runs in the Cedar Rapids Kernels' 6-3 win over the Kane County Cougars in Thursday night's Midwest League baseball.
The teams entered the inning tied at 3. Joe Cronin walked leading off and went to second on a Royce Lewis single. After a wild pitch, Aaron Whitefield was walked to load the bases with one out.
Lewin Diaz flied to right for the second out, no runs scoring. But Kerrigan came through with a drive to right field that cleared the bases.
Relief pircher Eddie Del Rosario pitched a scoreless ninth to obtain his first save of the season. Colton Davis got the win.
The Kernels scored three times in the fifth inning for a 3-1 lead. Travis Blankenhorn, Whitefield and Kerrigan had RBIs in the inning.
Every Kernels player had at least one hit in the game, led by Whitefield and Ben Rortvedt with two each. Starting pitcher Anthony Marzi threw five quality innings, allowing three hits and one run, though got no decision.
Cedar Rapids (70-60) begins a road series at Quad Cities that begins Friday night.
