Here is a look at where local, area and former Iowa Hawkeyes players are to begin the 2022 affiliated minor league and major league baseball seasons.
A couple of notes off the top:
Former Hawkeyes outfielder Joel Booker was released in spring training by the Chicago White Sox. A 22nd-round draft pick in 2016, Booker hit .269 in 470 career minor league games, reaching Triple-A.
Former Cedar Rapids Kennedy prep and Iowa pitcher Zach Daniels has retired. A 19th-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 2018, Daniels went 10-7 with a 3.03 earned run average in 62 career minor league games, pitching last season in high-Class A.
Former Kirkwood Community College outfielder Korry Howell was involved in a spring training trade, heading with minor league catcher Brett Sullivan from the Milwaukee Brewers to the San Diego Padres in exchange for major league catcher Victor Caratini.
Former Iowa infielder Mason McCoy was traded in the offseason from the Baltimore Orioles to the Seattle Mariners for cash.
Former Hawkeyes outfielder Ben Norman (Chicago White Sox) and pitchers Jack Dreyer (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Drew Irvine (Pittsburgh Pirates) are believed to be in extended minor league spring training, as is former Cedar Rapids Jefferson pitcher Spencer Van Scoyoc (Philadelphia Phillies) and former Mount Vernon/Iowa pitcher C.J. Eldred (Kansas City Royals).
All of these statistics are through Friday’s games.
Nick Allgeyer (Iowa/Toronto Blue Jays) — Left-handed pitcher has had two terrific starts for Triple-A Buffalo to begin the season. He is 1-0, has allowed just three hits, two walks and a run in 11 innings and struck out 13. Was taken off Toronto’s 40-man major league roster last season, which means he must clear waivers if he is re-added.
Tyler Cropley (Iowa/Kansas City Royals) — The catcher is 0 for 6 in three games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Matt Dermody (Iowa/Chicago Cubs) — Things have come full circle for the Norwalk native, as he is pitching for Triple-A Iowa. Has appeared in two games, allowing three hits and a run in 4 2/3 innings. Also has a win.
Nick Gallagher (Iowa City West/Iowa/Cleveland Guardians) — Pitching for the Double-A Akron Rubber Ducks. Has allowed five hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings in three bullpen appearances.
Grant Judkins (Pella/Iowa/Oakland Athletics) — Righty pitcher is back with low-A Stockton to begin 2022. Has made one start, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, three walks, three runs and striking out four.
Mitch Keller (Cedar Rapids Xavier/Pittsburgh Pirates) — Worked hard in the offseason to increase his velocity, which he has, though he’s 0-2 in two starts for the Pirates, allowing eight runs in 7 2/3 innings, with eight strikeouts.
Mason McCoy (Iowa/Seattle Mariners) — Infielder is 3-for-14 with an RBI to begin the 2022 season for Triple-A Tacoma.
Cole McDonald (New Hampton/Iowa/Houston Astros) — Injuries limited him to four games last season. Pitching for high-A Asheville, has thrown in two games thus far, throwing three innings, allowing one hit, one walk and no runs, striking out six.
Robert Neustrom (Iowa/Baltimore Orioles) — Outfielder is with Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .237 in nine games with two home runs and five RBIs. Not on the 40-man MLB roster ... yet.
A.J. Puk (Cedar Rapids Washington/Oakland Athletics) — Lefty reliever has thrown in three games for the A’s, allowing three hits and a run in four innings, striking out five. Placed on the restricted list Friday with a pair of teammates, as Oakland traveled to Toronto. Players not vaccinated for COVID-19 are not allowed to enter Canada.
Brady Schanuel (Iowa/Milwaukee Brewers) — Righty pitcher has been assigned for a second year in a row to high-A Wisconsin. Has pitched once in the early going, throwing two hitless, scoreless innings.
Scott Schebler (Cedar Rapids Prairie/Colorado Rockies) — Outfielder is with Triple-A Albuquerque. Is 5 for 35 in eight games, with two homers and 10 RBIs.
Connor Van Scoyoc (Cedar Rapids Jefferson/Los Angeles Angels) — Righty pitcher has made one start for low-A Inland Empire, allowing five hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Trenton Wallace (Iowa/Toronto Blue Jays) - Pitcher begins the season on the injured list at low-A Dunedin.
