Former RoughRider Wellman to sign with NHL's Wild

Mar. 15, 2010 8:10 pm
According to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders center Casey Wellman is going to sign a two-year, $1.8-million entry level NHL contract with the Minnesota Wild.
He could make his NHL debut Wednesday when the Wild play the Edmonton Oilers.
Wellman played the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with the Riders and has starred the past two seasons with the University of Massachusetts. He has 23 goals this season, sixth in the country.
Because he wasn't drafted, Wellman is a free agent, which explains the big money he's getting. It's a similar situation to that of former Rider Teddy Purcell after his freshman season at Maine.
Apparently 22 NHL clubs contacted Wellman's agent about securing his professional services. Impressive.
