Jan. 5, 2017 11:15 pm
MONTREAL — Troy Terry was the only one of 10 players successful in a five-round shootout as the United States won the gold medal at the 2017 World Junior Hockey Championship Tournament on Thursday night with a 5-4 victory over Canada.
Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders players Erik Foley and Jack Ahcan were members of the gold-medal winning American team.
Ahcan, a defenseman, played last season for the Riders and was named the United States Hockey League Defenseman of the Year. He is a freshman at St. Cloud State, whose coach, Bob Motzko, coached this USA team.
Foley played the entire 2014-15 season with Cedar Rapids. He has had a strong sophomore season for Providence.
Team USA went 7-0 in the tournament, beating Canada twice. It beat Russia in a shootout in Wednesday afternoon's semifinals.
America fell behind, 2-0, after one period Thursday night, tied it with two second-period goals, then fell behind again early in the third as Canada scored twice. USA tied it back up at 4-4 later in the third period on goals from Kieffer Bellows and Colin White.
The teams went to a deciding shootout after a scoreless 20-minute overtime session.
