Fast start propels Chiefs past Kernels

PEORIA - Peoria scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, then held on for an 8-6 Midwest League win Sunday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels before 1,913 fans at O'Brien Field.
P.J. Yang (1-4) gave up seven runs in five innings, striking out four and walking none. Jean Almanzar had three hits and Jeremy Cruz had two doubles and scored two runs for Cedar Rapids (17-25 second half).
The Kernels closed the gap to 7-6 in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer.
Game 3 of the four-game series is Monday at 7 p.m.
