Catching up with Bobby Goepfert

Feb. 17, 2010 12:22 pm
Had the opportunity last week to speak with former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Bobby Goepfert. Bobby is playing professional hockey in Hamburg, Germany, for the Hamburg Freezers.
Great name, huh? One of his teammates in Hamburg is former NHLers Clarke Wilm, Jason King, Mathieu Biron, Jean-Marc Pelletier and Jere Karalahti.
It's been a rough year for Goepfert, who lost his father to a sudden heart attack. It's his second year in Europe, after two years playing in the minor leagues in the U.S.
"I've had a bumpy pro ride," Goepfert said. "It's a dog-eat-dog world in the pros. I've come to realize that."
I'll have more from Bobby soon. He's still a great guy who remembers his days in Cedar Rapids very, very fondly.
