CEDAR RAPIDS - If bloodlines mean anything, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders found a couple of future gems Monday night.
The club added to its herd by selecting nine players in Phase I of the 2016 United States Hockey League Draft. That included forwards Ethan Manderville and Jordan Tonelli.
Selected in the seventh round, Manderville (a winger) is the son of former longtime NHLer Kent Manderville. Ethan played this past season for the Gloucester Rangers AAA team in Ontario.
Tonelli (a forward) is the son of John Tonelli, who won four Stanley Cup championships in the 1980s with the New York Islanders. Jordan Tonelli played this past season for Taft prep school in Connecticut.
All players drafted Monday are of 2000 birthdates. The first-overall selection was Gavin Hain, a center from Grand Rapids (Minn.) High School who went to the Sioux Falls Stampede.
Cedar Rapids did not have a second-round selection because of a prior trade. It didn't have a first-rounder, either, because of Shrewsbury, Mass., forward T.J. Walsh recently signed a pre-draft tender.
The Boston College commitment must spend the entire 2016-17 season on the Riders roster and play in a certain amount of games or else he will be eligible to be drafted by any USHL team next year.
The other RoughRiders draftees were goaltender Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich., third round), center Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass., fourth round), forward Cannon Green (Hinsdale, Ill., fifth round), defenseman Peter Garrett (Duxbury, Mass., sixth round), forward Brendan Budy (Langley, British Columbia, ninth round) and defenseman Calvin Dybicz (Elk Grove Village, Ill., 10th round).
Tonelli is a Brown University commit, Budy a University of Denver commit. Phase II of the draft is Tuesday.
