CEDAR RAPIDS - If you are a hockey fan and especially fond of the wide-open play in overtime, you’ll probably love this.
It was announced Thursday afternoon that the 3ICE three-on-three professional hockey league will play its 2026 season at Xtream Arena in Coralville, home of the ECHL’s Iowa Heartlanders.
League play begins Wednesday, June 10. The Patrick Cup championship will conclude the season Saturday, Aug. 15.
“We are building upon the incredible momentum from last season and are thrilled to bring 3ICE to the hungry hockey fans in Iowa,” said 3ICE founder and CEO E.J. Johnston. “Hockey fans across the country and around the world will see what this community has to offer, while FanDuel Sports Network and the NHL Network showcase the incredible speed and competition our players bring to this league week in and week out. This next chapter is being set up to be our best yet.”
This will be the fourth season for 3ICE. There are eight teams, one that will be rebranded to the name 3ICE Iowa.
There are three players and a goaltender per side in the game, which is played in two eight-minute halves. The clock runs non stop unless there are penalties and injuries.
Penalties do not result in power plays, but in penalty shots, with the head coach of the team picking the shooter. You can access full rules here.
Players generally are of ECHL/AHL quality. The head coaches of the teams all are former longtime National Hockey League players, including Hall of Famers.
Coaches are Ray Bourque (3ICE Boston), Guy Carbonneau (3ICE Iowa), Ken Daneyko (3Ice New York/New Jersey), Grant Fuhr (3ICE Chicago), John LeClair (3ICE Tennessee), Joe Mullen (3ICE Pittsburgh), Larry Murphy (3ICE Minnesota) and Pierre Turgeon (3ICE Buffalo).
Each team plays eight regular season games (on June 10, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 18, July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8). Tickets for games will go on sale soon and will be available at www.3ice.com.
Elite Casino Resorts is a corporate sponsor of the league and a driver in moving the league to the Corridor. Play was conducted last season in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
