Top 10 Gazette stories of the year: #6 Highway 100 expansion opens

The expansion of Highway 100 opened to the public in mid-December. The roadway has been under construction for much of 2015 and 2016, with a major component being the new bridge that spans the Cedar River.
The entire project, when completed, will span roughly 7.5 miles, and cost $200 million.
The first phase of the road is fully graded. Because of delays with the completion of work at Edgewood Road, paving has moved west to east from Covington to the new Cedar River Bridge. The general contractor L.L. Pelling, which holds the $15 million paving contract.
The road will have 12.5 inches of pavement on top of 15.5 inches of packed rock to help withstand the wear and tear of traffic.
The other half of the Highway 100 project - a 4-mile section from Covington Road to Highway 30 - will complete the roughly $214 million project. Work on that section is anticipated to be finished in 2020.
