CEDAR RAPIDS — Second Avenue will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, June 17, for construction of a floodgate.
The work is expected to take about six months.
The floodgate will be the latest addition to the city’s approximately $1 billion flood control system.
Vehicular traffic will be detoured to First or Third avenues. On-street parking will remain available on the bridge.
Access to May's Island — including the Veterans Memorial Building and underground parking — will stay open via First Street SW.
Pedestrians will have access from the May's Island parking structure to First Street SE through most of construction. The city will communicate any changes to pedestrian access throughout the project.
