Johnson County sells former Public Health building to nonprofit for $1

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Thursday night to sell a building for $1 so that it can be used by nonprofit organizations that help people in need.
The board's decision, which was expected, transfers ownership of the former county Public Health Department property to the Crisis Center of Johnson County.
The Crisis Center will lease space in the 7,300-square-foot building, at 1105 Gilbert Ct. in Iowa City, to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, Free Lunch Program of Iowa City and National Alliance on Mental Illness of Johnson County.
The building needs $800,000 in renovations. As of two weeks ago, a fundraising campaign in its “quiet phase” had brought in about $170,000.
Construction work is to start in October and be finished next spring.
