IOWA CITY -- The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is considering adoption of a resolution that condemns more than two dozen executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The resolution condemns any executive branch actions related to: the freezing of federal funds; establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE); environmental rollbacks; immigration restrictions; rollback of civil rights protections; healthcare directives; and other instances of “abuse of power”.
The resolution contains a list of 26 specific executive orders, organized by category.
Supervisor V Fixmer-Oraiz said members of the Johnson County community have reached out to the board asking for it to take some kind of action in response to the executive orders Trump has signed since he returned to office in January.
“I think that really the resolution is sort of focused on what I would characterize as the impacts of this on our community, which are pretty staggering,” Supervisor V Fixmer-Oraiz said at Tuesday’s work session. “So it's a recommitment saying we don't agree with this, and we'll continue to seek to uplift our residents in the ways that we can.”
The board will formally vote on the resolution in the next two weeks after the draft is updated to include mention of Eastern Iowa elected officials.
“It really should make some mention of the fact that all of this is done under emergency status that is granted by the Senate and the House. They don't have to grant that and that's what's making a lot of this possible ... So I think it would be a mistake for us to not mention that and not specifically call upon our representatives to stop,” said Supervisor Rod Sullivan.
