IOWA CITY — The city of Iowa City has hired the former city administrator of West Branch as its new deputy city manager.
Redmond Jones II will start Sept. 20 at an annual salary of $135,012.
He is filling the job previously held by Ashley Monroe, who is now assistant village manager in Riverside, Ill., City Manager Geoff Fruin said.
Jones was the West Branch city administrator since 2017 and before that was city manager of Groveland, Fla.
“Redmond has tremendous experience in a variety of different topic areas that we're frequently working on here in Iowa City,” Fruin told The Gazette.
Jones also worked for the city of Davenport as assistant to the city administrator/affirmative action officer, where he focused on economic development, contract negotiations and crisis management.
He has experience in strategic planning, sustainability efforts, human rights, equity and inclusion and budget analysis.
“He's led other communities, he's worked in on diversity and equity inclusion efforts, on policing efforts, economic development, as well as some of the more internal functions related to the position like budgeting and human resources,” Fruin said.
“It's that varied experience that he brings that will really add a lot of value to our management team here in Iowa City.”
Jones received a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Kansas. He also completed a government executive program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
