GOP may have primary for state treasurer

Dec. 2, 2009 1:32 pm
A pair of Republicans has announced they may run for State Treasurer, a position Democrat Mike Fitzgerald has held since 1982.
Story County Treasurer Dave Jamison has filed paperwork and assembled a campaign committee to explore entering the race and Dyersville Mayor Jim Heavens also announced plans to seek the Republican nomination.
Jamison was first elected Story County Treasurer in 1994 and is currently serving his fourth term. Prior to public office, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal from the Secretary of Defense. Jamison is a member of a number of service clubs and organizations. He and his wife, Karen, live in Ames with their three children.

Heavens, 58, has been mayor since 2003, and has been involved in the livestock feed industry. With 32 years in the corporate world, Heavens believes he would bring a fresh perspective to the office.
