CEDAR RAPIDS — District 3 incumbent Dale Todd is seeking re-election to the Cedar Rapids City Council.
Todd, 68, announced his run Tuesday to continue representing the district that covers downtown Cedar Rapids and much of the southeast quadrant. His name will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot.
“I believe that city government, at its best, helps people and connects them with the services they need,” Todd said in a written statement. “My vision is to lead Cedar Rapids toward a more secure, successful and resilient future.”
Before the city adopted a council-city manager form of government in 2005 and instead elected five commissioners, Todd was commissioner of Parks and Public Property from 1998 to 2002.
He later ran and was elected to the District 3 seat in 2017 and was then reelected in 2021 when he took nearly 63 percent of the vote to beat challenger Tamara Marcus.
On the council, he is a member of the Public Safety and Youth Services Committee.
He also has been an ardent supporter of efforts to revitalize Cedar Lake and for the recent push to better understand and support the local arts community.
In his campaign announcement, Todd said some of his priorities if reelected include public safety, economic development and affordable housing access.
He also hopes to address new and ongoing challenges facing the city, such as ongoing shortages in mental health care and the rise in downtown vacancies since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our city faces a new generation of challenges — complex issues without simple solutions,” Todd wrote. “Guided by compassion, grounded in experience and committed to principled leadership, I will continue to confront these difficulties directly and work tirelessly to achieve lasting progress for the people of Cedar Rapids.”
Outside of his time on the council, Todd serves as vice president of development for the Hatch Development Group, which works on affordable and workforce housing developments across the state of Iowa.
His seat is one of five Cedar Rapids City Council seats up for re-election this fall, including the mayoral seat currently held by incumbent Tiffany O’Donnell. Other seats up for election include one at-large seat and those in districts 1 and 5.
