CEDAR RAPIDS — After letting residents weigh in, the city of Cedar Rapids will unveil its new flag design Saturday.
The new flag will be unveiled at 10 a.m. Saturday in the lobby of the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s downtown location, 450 Fifth Ave. SE, according to a news release.
The city asked residents to rank four blue, green and white design options to choose the new flag as a symbol of community pride. The city received 2,624 responses to the online survey, which ended in August.
The new flag process started in 2019 when Cedar Rapids asked residents to submit design ideas, colors, shapes and symbols for a new flag, with the goal of creating a flag that reflects Cedar Rapids and incorporates citizen ideas.
Cedar Rapids paused the project because of the pandemic and the 2020 derecho. When the process resumed, volunteer graphic designers created options, using public input.
Members of the North American Vexillological Association provided two rounds of ratings, comments and suggestions on the submitted designs. A local committee used the association’s feedback and resident input to select the four finalists.
Digital files of the new flag will be made available for printing and other community uses.
Businesses interested in creating flag merchandise may contact the city at CityFlag@cedar-rapids.org.
