Cedar Rapids' McGrath Amphitheatre Labor Day kick-off set for Aug. 30
Aug. 16, 2013 2:09 pm
The city will hold a Labor Day Kick-Off Celebration at its new McGrath Amphitheatre on Friday, Aug. 30, and three local bands will perform for free on that day to celebrate the venue's opening on the riverfront across from downtown.
Shortcut to Nowhere will perform from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Helforstout will play from 5 to 6 p.m. and Super Size Seven from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The amphitheatre is designed to be connected to a Festival Grounds park area along Diagonal Drive SW, and this week the City Council approved plans to construct a 14-foot-wide trail from the amphitheatre along the riverfront to the Festival Grounds.
Work on the trail is expected to cost $140,000, will begin in October and be complete by May 20, 2014, the city reported.
People gather before Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett announces the naming sponsor of the new amphitheatre along the Cedar River at a press conference Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in southwest Cedar Rapids. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
