A panel of contest court judges ruled 2-1 Monday that a narrowly-passed $15 million bond issue at Highland schools would stand, even though Ainsworth precinct officials mistakenly gave ballots to 96 voters who were not school district residents, and should not have been allowed to vote on the matter.
Only residents of Iowa City’s District C are eligible to vote in the primary on Feb. 4, but all city residents can vote in the general election, which will be March 4. District C includes downtown Iowa City and north-central Iowa City.
The Iowa City Council’s District C seat is vacant after Andrew Dunn’s resignation took effect Jan. 1. Three people have filed to run for the office.

A group of petitioners has submitted paperwork challenging the outcome of a $15 million bond measure in the Highland school district, after county officials said an unknown number of voters at one polling place were given the wrong ballots on Election Day.
According to unofficial election results reported by the Iowa Secretary of State, 1.58 million Iowans have voted in the election so far, the same number of residents who voted in 2016. Iowans set a record in the 2020 General Election with 1.69 million ballots cast.
The bond will be used to protect water quality, preserve natural areas and improve public access to parks and trails in Johnson County over the next 20 years.
