Marianne Wainwright

Incumbent, Fairfax City Council

I grew up in the Fairfax area and raised my family here, so I have been able to watch the town and my family grow. My parents have owned and operated several business in Fairfax since 1971, so I have seen the commercial growth in our town as well. I love the small town feel of our community, and want to retain that integrity!

1. If elected, what would be your top three priorities while serving on the Fairfax City Council?

Keeping our property tax rate at 8.10. It is one of the lowest in Eastern Iowa. Maintaining our current and future construction projects at levels we can afford. Allowing for future growth while maintaining our small town integrity and sense of community is very important to me.

2. What do you see as the top issue facing Fairfax today, and how do you believe the City Council could help address it?

We have two main issues: Potential Power Plant and Expansion of the 3rd runway at the Eastern Iowa Airport. I believe it is important to get as much information as possible and input from outside sources prior to making any hasty decisions.

3. Alliant Energy has proposed the construction of a natural gas power plant to be built in Fairfax. What are your thoughts on this proposal, and do you think the City Council should be supportive of the project?

I am truly on the fence regarding this issue. I live close to the potential site and a lot of my neighbors believe it would have a negative impact on our town. I think property owners in close proximity to this plant could see their property valuation and health. Both being causes for concern. Being on council we have had a lot of information on the proposed plant, and that it would be the first of it's kind in the Midwest. It is an enclosed system, similar to a radiator and will not have cooling towers like Marshalltown. I think it would be a good thing for our community but that is my personal opinion and I will vote on this issue based on what I feel the residents want and not what I want!

4. Within the last year, the city of Fairfax has altered its leadership structure to bring on a city administrator. If elected, how would you work to develop and maintain an effective and productive relationship with the administrator and with city staff more broadly?

Our city administrator is new to this role and it will take patience on everyone's part as we learn to work together.
