1. If elected, what would be your top three priorities while serving on the Coralville City Council?

1) Local Option Sales Tax to fund the Community/Recreation Center and Youth Sports Complex and provide property tax relief, 2) 2nd Street Gather Iowa Project 3 ) encourage the development of a comprehensive long term regional traffic plan to help alleviate traffic congestion in Coralville and get the main artierals out of the neighborhoods. The first step would be the extension of Forevergreen Rd. to divert commuter traffic from the north off of 12th Avenue.

2. What do you see as the top issue facing Coralville today, and how do you believe the City Council could help address it?

Passing the Local Option Sales Tax is the top issue, since this will fund the much needed Community/Recreation Center and the Youth Sports Complex that will benefit all the residents of Coralville as well as providing a facility for the students in the ICCSD. The council will help educate the residents of Coralville through public meetings, city publications such as the Coralville Connection on the benefits of the Local Option Sales Tax. The council can also support the Convention and Visitors Bureau which brings in various events that create millions of dollars in spending here by the attendees. In 2023 visitors spent $458 million in Johnson County.

3. If the city were faced with budget cuts, how would you handle doing so as a City Council member and are there specific areas of the city’s budget you would look to first for potential reductions?

Coralville carefully budgets current and future city needs to avoid the need for budget cuts. Coralville has vibrant shopping areas and this along with UIHC makes it a hub for all of southeastern Iowa. While visiting the holocaust museum recently in Danville, IA the docent asked where we were from and exclaimed ,"Oh everyone here goes to Coralville to shop."

4. Affordable housing has been identified as a community need. What do you see as the City Council’s role in addressing that issue, and what steps if any would you take as a council member to do so?

I support Coralville's current initiative of using private builders to include affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity has constructed a number of houses in Coralville. A portion of the Local Option Sales Tax has been designated for affordable housing.

5. Do you support the local option sales tax ballot measure that appears on the Nov. 4 ballot? Why or why not?

I definitely support the local option sales tax since that will provide the funding for all the projects Coralville has planned and will provide property tax relief. This includes the much needed Community/Recreation Center & Youth Sports Complex - as well as property tax relief and funds for affordable housing.

6. How important is regional collaboration with government and non-government entities? What opportunities, if any, would you approach as a region and what will you do to support that?

Public Safety requires regional collaboration through communication to be effective for police, fire, and weather emergencies. Johnson County has an excellent communication center.

7. What will you do to be responsive to residents? What types of communication should the public expect from you?

Residents can contact me anytime by phone, text, or email.

8. What will you do to build relationships with council members who may have differing opinions from your own?

Good relationships among council members are essential to produce positive solutions. Coralville has a long history of annual strategic planning to work through goals. .

9. What do you think the city does well today? What do you think can be improved on and how will you go about making it happen?

Coralville's staff is one of the best and most responsive in the state. A community/recreation center to serve the entire community & the Iowa City Community School District will be achieved with the Local Option Sales Tax. It's an old term, but we have a shovel ready project.

10. What, if any, role should the city play in business and economic development? What are the most important criteria in determining whether to offer tax incentives and how those criteria should be measured against the use of public funds?

Coralville has always led the way on building infrastructure to increase the value of the community while maintaining and improving the quality of life for the residents. The value is we have excellent healthcare and shopping creating an economic hub for eastern Iowa. We have quality community services & quality public safety. Any outlay by the city needs to be justified by the positive return it will provide to the residents of Coralville.
