CORALVILLE — The Coralville City Council and mayoral races are starting to heat up as more candidates launch their campaigns a little over a week away from the filing deadline for the November general election.
The Coralville City Council is made up of five at-large council members and a non-voting mayor. Council members serve staggered four-year terms, and the mayor serves a two-year term.
Mayor Meghann Foster and council members Hai Hyunh, Mike Knudson and Laurie Goodrich are up for election this fall.
Foster, who is Coralville’s first female mayor, has announced that she will not seek re-election.
Hyunh and Knudson have not yet filed for re-election, but Hyunh has announced her intention to run again.
Goodrich, who has served on the council since 2014, has filed to run for Coralville mayor.
Prospective candidates have until 5 p.m. Sept. 18 to file for candidacy with the Johnson County Auditor’s Office.
New candidates for mayor and council
Goodrich will face off against Ryan Swenka, a software trainer, who has launched his first mayoral campaign.
Katie Freeman, a self-employed furniture designer, has filed to run for City Council. Freeman and Swenka have begun campaigning together, with a joint campaign event scheduled for Sunday.
Kathy Hotsenpiller, who served as the chair of the now-defunct Coralville Citizens Police Review Board, also has filed for a spot on the City Council.
Deb Gill, a retired financial analyst, last week also announced her intention to run for a seat on the council.
Absentee ballot requests now available
From now until 5 p.m. Oct. 20, eligible voters can request an absentee ballot from the county auditor’s office. Other early voting information still is being finalized.
Election Day is Nov. 4. All absentee ballots must be turned in by 8 p.m. that day to be counted.
